Working Start Project

Working Start was a European funded employment project, focusing on the needs of disabled adults. The project ran from July 2001 to July 2002 and we worked with over 70 people during this time. For the first time we focussed on job outcomes rather than qualification gains and our target was to get 30 jobs for clients. We achieved 28 jobs by the end of the project.

We used our traditional model of supported employment to carefully match job applicants to offers of employment. From December, we also took the opportunity to expand our service to pilot a local service for people with physical and sensory disabilities.

We employed 4 additional Placement Officers for this project but due to delays in the approval notification, they joined us during November. We secured 14 jobs to the end of November and 28 by the end of the project.

We secured jobs with employers in the retail, education, catering & hospitality, care, packing and service sectors with hours varying from 16 to 48 per week.
